ConocoPhillips distributed $3.408 billion through dividends and share repurchases in the third quarter, against $4.039 billion of company-defined free cash flow, according to its November 5 earnings materials. That left a calculated $631 million before other cash uses, rather than a measure of the quarter’s change in cash.
The non-GAAP measure starts with $7.195 billion of operating cash flow, removes a $23 million working-capital contribution and deducts $3.133 billion of capital expenditures and investments. Dividends paid were $1.007 billion, with repurchases accounting for the remaining $2.401 billion distributed.
Asset sales brought in a separate $1.566 billion. Those proceeds sit outside the free-cash-flow measure and should not be treated as recurring operating cash. Other investment flows, financing payments and exchange-rate effects also mean the $631 million residual is not the actual cash-balance movement.
The company also raised its quarterly ordinary dividend to $0.93 per share, effective for the fourth-quarter payment due December 1. That future rate is separate from the third-quarter cash already paid. Whether operating cash generation can sustain dividends, investment and buybacks remains a question for subsequent periods.
