3M’s November 4 filing separates a $7.35 billion nominal settlement commitment from a planned pretax charge of approximately $5.8 billion. The charge, expected in the fourth quarter of 2026, reflects the present value of contributions under its November 3 PFAS personal-injury settlement, rather than an immediate cash payment.
An initial $50 million is due within 30 days of the settlement. No payments are scheduled in 2027. The first $1.045 billion main installment is scheduled for January 15, 2028, or 30 days after termination rights are exhausted or waived, whichever is later.
The six main installments add to $6.27 billion. Including the initial payment and potential additional payments, the schedule’s listed maximum totals $7.35 billion through 2034. Actual amounts and timing depend on participation and other conditions; all payments after the initial one are contingent on neither party exercising termination rights.
3M says the charge will be treated as a special item in adjusted results and leaves its 2026 guidance unchanged. That accounting treatment does not remove future cash obligations. The question to follow is how settlement participation and conditions translate into actual payments alongside the company’s other commitments.
